THE PROPOSAL

Real-Life Proposal Story: Electric Violin, Perfect Timing, and One Very Important “Yes!”

Some of life’s biggest moments take weeks — sometimes months — of planning, anticipation, and secret coordination. And honestly? There is something incredibly magical about realizing you’ve found the person you want to walk through life with.

Back in mid-September, I received a phone call from T.J. Popolizio with a very exciting mission: help create the perfect soundtrack for his surprise proposal to his girlfriend, Janelle.

Immediately, I was all in.

T.J. explained that every evening, he and Janelle took their sweet pup for a walk around the Troy waterfront after she got home from work. But on this particular night, their usual stroll would include an “electric violin street performer” playing romantic music along the way.

(My undercover role had officially begun.)

The most important detail? At the exact moment of the proposal, I needed to perform Janelle’s favorite song: “Young and Beautiful” by Lana Del Rey.

No pressure, right?

As November approached, T.J. stayed in touch while we all collectively obsessed over the weather forecast hoping for a perfect fall evening. The night before the proposal, T.J. and his friend — photographer extraordinaire J.P. Elario — mapped out the entire choreography of the evening like a romantic heist movie. They even sent me a video showing exactly where I should set up and how the timing would work.

I was loving every second of this.

On November 5th, I arrived in Troy around 5:30 PM with my electric violin and trusty amplifier in tow. T.J. met me at my car and secretly escorted me to my performance location like we were planning an undercover operation.

As the clock crept toward 6:00 PM, I took my place and began performing for the evening crowd. Pedestrians wandered by dropping money into my violin case, completely unaware that they had accidentally become background actors in a real-life romantic movie scene.

Honestly? It was amazing.

At exactly 6:30 PM, I spotted T.J. walking down the street with Janelle and their adorable pup. As they passed by my setup, T.J. casually gave me a tiny nod and subtle hand signal to let me know they were circling the block one more time.

Timing is EVERYTHING in moments like this, and I have to say — T.J. absolutely nailed it.

When they returned a few minutes later, they stopped just a few feet away from me. I was finishing Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect,” which honestly could not have matched the atmosphere more beautifully. I let the last notes linger for a moment before seamlessly transitioning into Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful.”

And then it happened.

T.J. got down on one knee.

But instead of immediately pulling out the ring, he first handed Janelle a drawing — a cartoon illustration of the exact moment unfolding in front of them: the two of them, their pup, and him proposing.

Cue every emotion imaginable.

The energy in the air felt electric. People nearby stopped walking. Smiles spread everywhere. It was one of those moments where time almost slows down for a second.

And then, as if on cue, photographer J.P. Elario appeared out of nowhere like a cinematic ninja magician — cell phone in one hand, camera gear in the other — somehow capturing every second without disrupting the magic.

Of course, Janelle said YES!

The newly engaged couple hugged, kissed, laughed, and soaked in the moment while I continued playing nearby with the biggest smile on my face.

Then off they went to celebrate at a nearby restaurant where T.J. had secretly gathered their closest friends for an engagement party waiting to surprise them.

The celebration continued all night long.

And me? I drove home feeling unbelievably grateful to do what I do.

Moments like this are why I love being a musician in the wedding and events world. It’s never just about playing songs — it’s about helping create memories people will carry with them forever.

And the best part? I’ll get to continue the story by performing at their wedding, too.
